Wotton-under-Edge is famous for the number of pubs and taverns that existed in the town, thanks to its position on the old London-Cardiff trading route. The new Fortis Living development in the town, being built by Aqua Construction, is on land adjacent to Fountain Crescent. This was named after the Fountain Inn, which used to stand opposite the mouth of the road. Subsequently converted to a private house, Richard Dauncey lived there for many years. Meanwhile, Samuel Dauncey was the first landlord of the Earl Grey, another pub that used to back on to the development site. Therefore, Dauncey Close will become the name of the development’s new road.
