Wellington Street, Gloucester Centre

Background

The Wellington Street site was previously home to The Gloucester British School between the 19th and 20th century.

Established during 1852 it was roughly open for 140 years, but during the 1990s the building towards the rear of the site was demolished. This was later developed into Hampden Way Car Park. During 2005 the front of the building was demolished, leaving the area neglected and abandoned, causing it to be unsightly to the local residents.

During the demolition of the school, some plaques and stones were recovered. Part of the planning permission required us to incorporate these into the building work of No.7 Wellington Street.

Development

Wellington Street is a development with Two River Housing, to supply the residents of Gloucester with 22 new affordable flats. Being right in the centre of Gloucester this will enable ease of access and travel to the new residents. The development consists of the following:

  • 11 x one-bedroom flats
  • 11 x two-bedroom flats

In keeping with the architecture of the surrounding buildings, the Wellington Street development incorporated traditional and modern materials. Meaning the completed building complemented its surrounding ones.

Our team started development in August 2017 and it was completed on time and handed over to Two Rivers Housing on March 15th 2018.

This development was shortlisted as a finalist in the LABC West of England Awards 2019 for Best Social or Affordable New Housing Development and Best Small New Housing Development.
